Check out @chriscoyier’s @css post on how complicated it can be to work with images. What I do (in my personal projects) is push hard on simplicity: <img> element, one image file, dimensions ×1.5/×2. This comes with a perf tax—but it’s still an option. css-tricks.com/images-are-hard/
