  1. Just realized I’ve been unclear with the quoted statement. The HTML spec does make it: html.spec.whatwg.org/multipage/parsing.html#parse-error-non-void-html-element-start-tag-with-trailing-solidus. But I went astray pulling it out of context, and weirdly alluding (and not spelling out) that void elements don’t need “closing,” as in “<br />”. (Thanks @zcorpan!) @j9t/1440088336681607170

      FWIW, the connecting section is § 13.1.2.1, html.spec.whatwg.org/multipage/syntax.html#start-tags: “[…] there may be a single U+002F SOLIDUS character (/). This character has no effect on void elements, but on foreign elements it marks the start tag as self-closing.”
